Any species from the genera Gleditsia or Robinia is considered as a Locust tree. White locust, black locust, water locust and honey locust as just some well known locust trees which are from the fenera Gleditsia. Honey locust is a deciduous tree and isnative to central North America. It is found in moist soil of river vallesy from souteastern South Dakota to New Orleans and Texas, and as fat as Massachusetts. Honey locust can also fe found growing wild in Georgia. It can reach a height of about 30 metres tall.
It's a relatively short lived tree with life span about 120 years. Some specimens can reach up to 150 years old. Honey locust trees are prone to losing large branches in windstorms. The Ĩeaves are pinnately compound on older trees. The leaflets are around 2 cm and bright green color. They turn yellow in the fall. Honey locust trees produce strongly scented cream colored flowers which appear in late spring. Flowers are formed in clusters emerging from the base off the leaf axils.
Flat legume is fruit produced by poplars in early autumn. The pods are around 20 cm long,. Honey locust tree is used for its durable high quality wood which polishes well. It is used for posts and rails because it takes a long time for them to rot. The legumes are used as high protein cattle fodder. Honey locust is a nitrogen fixer which helps the soil and plants around it. Locust tree have many benefical properties in medicine and domestics. They are also used in treating rheumatoid arthritis, as nati mutagenic, and anticancer.
